This is a collection of PowerPoint Presentations (PPT's) that describe various dental related procedures and other items of interest that will be updated as time goes on. The PPT's on dental technique require literally hundreds of hours of capture, formatting, and editing before the final product is ready to show. These few PPT's represent thousands of hours of effort by various individuals and will help the more advanced student of dentistry begin to understand the scientific concepts of Micro-Dentistry and the techniques of Minimally Invasive Dentistry.
My friend and colleague, Dr. Graeme Milicich of New Zealand has taken the art of educational PPT's to the highest level. What took me several years to understand and then several more years to explain to the dental profession, Dr. Milicich has the gift of condensing into an easily understandable series of slides in PowerPoint, for example the concept of "Occlusal Effect Caries". As is often the case among scientists in an emerging field, we do not always agree, (i.e. on "Tunnel Preps") but that is how Science advances. What the experienced observer will witness is the merging of the murkey area between Science (Micro-Dentistry), and Technique (Minimally Invasive Dentistry). Tunnel preps are extremely technique sensitive and require exquisite magnification and understanding of the science of the procedure, while the 70 year old technique of "Slot Preps", as proposed by Miles Markley, is faster and more simple, but still requires magnification and good understanding of the procedure.
Slot preps are certainly a reasonable alternative, and obviously greatly more beneficial to the patient than the inexcuesable, mindless gutting of the teeth as is taught in most major universities (and therefore is still practiced by the vast majority of dentists), so Buyer Beware. Meanwhile, we have successfully completed thousands of "Tunnel Preps", and are still modifying the procedure to accommodate the idiosyncracies of the materials. We will be posting some of these successful cases to the Web soon.
Bottom line, the more the patient knows about dentistry and procedures, the better informed he/she is and the better the decisions one can make concerning his or her care, specially in this age of the evolving Science of Micro-Dentistry. What our research has revealed is that the the less we, as Dentists, can do to teeth, the more likely the tooth is to hold up over a long period of time. That defines the focus of Micro-Dentistry, the Science of treating teeth on the microscopic level.
Welcome to the Revolution.
